Official Mission Statement

To provide and promote the global standard for socially, environmentally and economically sustainable production and conversion of biomass.

• To provide a global platform for multistakeholder dialogue and consensus building.

• To ensure access to credible, practical and affordable certification.

• To support continuous improvement through application of the standard.

Year of Establishment 2007

Key Features

* RSB’s certification ensures that any bio-based feedstock, biomass-derived material and any advanced fuel, as well as complete supply-chains and novel technologies are socially responsible, environmentally sustainable and credibly sourced – supporting the mitigation of business, environmental and social risk.

* The RSB Standard has been designed, and is continuously developed, to support certification in all circumstances, anywhere in the world.

* By requiring that any function of the environment that is affected by the production of a biomaterial is either maintained or enhanced, the RSB is uniquely positioned to ensure that ecosystems are protected.

* RSB has specific requirements for GHG calculation for forest based biomass and therefore guarantees real GHG emission savings.

* The impact of indirect land use change (ILUC) is a source of major criticism of biofuels, but RSB deals with it conclusively in their world-first low-ILUC risk module which ensures that biofuels and all biomaterials can provably demonstrate minimal risk of indirect land use change impacts.

* The RSB actively supports operators with guidance and advice to protect and promote the ecosystems they work in. This goes well beyond the approach of many other standards which only check that impacts are minimised.

*By requiring that operators have a positive impact on their communities, RSB directly addresses socio-economic issues and helps to alleviate poverty.

* RSB has a particularly strong approach to ensuring the Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) of affected community stakeholders. FPIC is particularly important in areas of land dispute and RSB works with stakeholders to ensure that certified operators are not involved in community disputes and does not rely solely on official documents for determining the legal status of land.

* Thorough stakeholder consultation is a key requirement of the RSB certification process in order to identify non-compliance and sustainability issues early. It is of particular relevance when considering issues such as water, land rights and other risks that are likely to affect the broader community.
