Official Mission Statement

Our aim is to ensure continued access to our key agricultural raw materials and communicate the value of sustainable sourcing to consumers and influence their buying habits.

Year of Establishment 2003

Key Features

* In order for all of the volume to count as ‘sustainably sourced’, farmers can either be certified against a certification scheme which Unilever recognise as equivalent to Sustainable Agriculture Code, or fulfil the scheme rules which apply for suppliers who do self-assessment against the Code.

* This Code is applicable to all Unilever suppliers of agricultural goods, the farmers producing them and contractors working on farm. The suppliers are held responsible for implementing the Code; however, many good practices must be applied by farmers.

* Unilever defines sustainable sourcing using 11 social, economic and environmental indicators: Soil health, Soil loss, Nutrients, Pest management, Biodiversity, Farm economics, Energy, Water, Social and human capital, Local economy and Animal welfare.

* For some crop suppliers, Unilever is using Quickfire, a software tool which allows suppliers to carry out a self-assessment against each of the 11 indicators which make up the Sustainable Agriculture Code. The tool calculates whether or not a supplier’s volume counts as being sustainably sourced and identifies areas of best practice and areas for improvement, providing a basis to build a collaborative action plan for continuous improvement.
