Official Mission Statement

POETCom is the peak organics body for the Pacific region, and its secretariat is based at SPC with funding support from the EU Increasing Agricultural Commodities Trade project (IACT). POETCom’s vision is that Organics and Ethical trade will be the key contributors to sustaining our cultures and communities; improving farmer livelihoods, communities, people’s health and the environment in the Pacific.

Key Features

The aims of this standard are: i) to ensure that sustainable production systems are developed and maintained; ii) to protect consumers against deception and fraud in the marketplace and against unsubstantiated claims; iii) to protect producers of organic produce against misrepresentation of other agricultural produce as organic; to ensure that all stages of production, processing, storage, transport and marketing are subject to inspection and comply with this standard; iv) to assist in informing consumers about the character of organic production in the Pacific.

Tasks: 1.Pacific Organic Standard (POS): While the POS its logos and seals are owned by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), SPC will delegate management to POETCom including; i) Maintaining and reviewing the standards on an agreed periodic basis; ii) Seek equivalence with other standards in the market place such as EU, JAS, NOP etc; iii) Seek legal recognition at national level of the POS. / 2.Organic Pasifika (OP) mark: i) Manage the application and use of the ‘OP’ mark or logo (delegated from SPC); ii) Develop rules and systems for use of the ‘OP’ mark and monitor application and compliance with these rules; iii) Seek legal protection of the mark and brand; iv) Market the ‘OP’ brand. / 3.Certification: i) Coordinate and accredit certifying agencies working in the Pacific and certifying to the POS; ii) Identify appropriate models of certification for the Pacific Region and assist countries access certification; iii) Develop certification procedures for certifying bodies.
